Manual Therapy & Mobilization

Manual therapy and mobilization are hands-on physiotherapy techniques used to improve movement, reduce pain, and support the recovery of muscles, joints, and soft tissues. A trained physiotherapist uses carefully controlled movements, pressure, stretching, and joint techniques according to the individual's condition and treatment goals.

What Is Manual Therapy?

Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques directed toward muscles, joints, connective tissues, and other areas affected by stiffness or restricted movement. Depending on the assessment, treatment may include soft-tissue techniques, joint mobilization, stretching, and movement-based techniques. The aim is to help improve mobility and make movement more comfortable.

Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization involves gentle, controlled movements applied to a joint by a physiotherapist. It may be used when joint stiffness or restricted movement is affecting normal activities. Techniques are selected based on the joint involved, the person's symptoms, and their functional limitations.

Soft-Tissue Techniques

Soft-tissue techniques may be used to address muscle tightness and areas of soft-tissue restriction. Treatment can involve targeted pressure, massage, or other hands-on methods. These techniques are often combined with active exercises to help maintain improvements in movement.

How It Supports Rehabilitation

Manual therapy is commonly incorporated into a broader physiotherapy program rather than being used as the only treatment. A physiotherapist may combine hands-on treatment with strengthening, flexibility exercises, posture correction, and functional training. This combination can help patients work toward improved mobility and return to everyday activities.

Manual therapy may be considered for various musculoskeletal problems, including back and neck discomfort, joint stiffness, sports injuries, shoulder problems, and rehabilitation following certain injuries or procedures. Treatment should be individualized after an appropriate assessment.
